Sweet Petunia and Grace Givertz

Sweet Petunia is an alt-folk duo blending old time and traditional folk with a punk DIY spirit. They are known for their silk and grit harmonies and double banjo action. Their debut “Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown” is available now on Righteous Babe Records. Mairead Guy (they/them) and Maddy Simpson (she/her) crossed paths while attending Berklee College of Music in 2018. When they joined their school's 21st Century String Band ensemble, their classmates were convinced the duo must be related because their voices interwove so naturally. But it wasn't until a fateful day during a rehearsal delay that, with the unexpected free time, Guy and Simpson struck up a conversation and realized they shared a love for Simon & Garfunkel and Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings. After meeting up for casual jam sessions a couple of times, Simpson and Guy formed their own project, Sweet Petunia. Since then, they have been nominated twice by the Boston Music Awards for Best Folk Act and have performed at music festivals including In Between Days and Nice, a Fest. Sweet Petunia is now introducing themselves to a wider audience with their debut LP, Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown, released on March 13th via Righteous Babe Records. Foggy Mountain Mental Breakdown is a collection of songs written during a period of growing pains, reflecting on breakups, outgrown friendships, tumultuous cycles that needed to be broken, and self-discovery. Its title is a play on Flatt & Scruggs' classic bluegrass tune, as the album is an homage to the traditional folk that shaped the duo, while also drawing on their local punk and DIY scene to give it a contemporary twist. As a multi-instrumentalist, she infuses her music with a diverse array of sounds, weaving folk, Americana, and indie rock into a tapestry uniquely her own.   Drawing inspiration from her personal journey living with chronic illness, Givertz's music resonates with raw emotion and introspection. Her experiences infuse her songs with depth and authenticity, inviting listeners to explore themes of resilience and vulnerability.   Her sophomore release,  Midnight Feature  out March 13th 2026, exclusively features BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or disabled musicians. This collaborative effort not only amplifies underrepresented voices but also underscores her commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the music industry. In 2023, this lead to her participating in  WXPN’s Black Opry Residency Philadelphia. She has opened for favorites including Lucy Dacus, Cassadee Pope, Ezra Furman, John Paul White (The Civil Wars), Neyla Pekarek (The Lumineers), and more. Givertz's talent shines bright, earning her acclaim for her captivating performances. She has been nominated for two Boston Music Awards, as well as receiving the City of Boston's Extraordinary Women Award in 2023 and Allston Village Main Street's Artist of the Year in 2025 for her contributions to music and community. Beyond accolades, she shares her expertise through songwriting workshops, including sessions with the Harvard Ed Portal, empowering others to authentically express themselves.   Grace Givertz's melodies resonate as beacons of authenticity, illuminating the indie folk landscape and reminding us of the enduring power of storytelling through song.
