Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist Steve Harris. Pioneers of the new wave of British heavy metal, they blend galloping metal with progressive and theatrical elements, with lyrics drawing on history, literature, war and mythology. "The Number of the Beast" (1982) was their first UK number one. Their mascot Eddie features on almost every cover and in their elaborate stage shows.
