American Football is an emo and math rock band formed in Urbana, Illinois, in 1997 by singer and guitarist Mike Kinsella. The band blends the intimacy of emo with unusual time signatures, alternate guitar tunings and jazz influenced space. Their 1999 self-titled debut became one of the most acclaimed emo albums of its era; the band split in 2000, reunited in 2014 and released further self-titled albums in 2016 and 2019.
