The Blind Boys of Alabama are an American gospel group formed in 1939 by students at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Deaf and Blind in Talladega. Their harmony singing moves between traditional gospel, blues and soul, and they are known for reworking secular songwriters such as Tom Waits and Prince. The group holds a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a place in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and "Echoes of the South" (2023), recorded in Muscle Shoals, won Best Roots Gospel Album. Their version of "Way Down in the Hole" was the theme to the HBO series The Wire.
