Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston in 1986 by Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering. Their songs swing between hushed verses and explosive choruses, with surreal lyrics about space, religion, sex and violence. Albums like "Surfer Rosa" (1988) and "Doolittle" (1989) shaped nineties rock, and Kurt Cobain said he was trying to rip them off with "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
