José Alberto "El Canario" is a Dominican salsa singer whose whistle-filled voice earned him his canary nickname. Born in Santo Domingo and raised in Puerto Rico, he helped pioneer salsa romántica with romantic, up-tempo arrangements. He rose through Típica 73 before his 1984 debut "Noches Calientes" and 1991 hit "Dance With Me." Live, his improvisational whistling and sonero phrasing have made him a staple across Latin America and U.S. salsa stages.
