Emancipator is the project of American producer Douglas Appling, born in Virginia and based in Portland, Oregon. The music is instrumental downtempo and trip hop, layering sampled beats with live instrumentation and folk-leaning melodies. Appling released his debut "Soon It Will Be Cold Enough" (2006) as a college student and founded the Loci Records label in 2012. Violinist Ilya Goldberg, who records as Lapa, has long been his touring partner on stage.
