Silence Please presents: Tokyo Whisper

About the concert
A tribute to Japanese ongaku kissa culture
TYPEFUNK (Nightfreq / SDC)
Purveyor of disco and funk—Yokchi Chang, aka Typefunk, has been DJing clubs
since before he was legally able to get into them. Born in Ecuador, raised in
Miami, and now based in Salt Lake City, Chang’s parties have delivered worldly
and stylized disco to the dance-starved valley since 2008.
Founder of the production company, Nightfreq, Chang has hosted artists and
acts from all over the world including France's Onra and London’s Horse Meat
Disco. The success of his high energy parties has solidified Nightfreq as a
staple of underground music in Utah. While he’s expanded the reach of
Nightfreq’s productions, his flagship party, Social Disco Club, is a testament to
his love of NYC’s Paradise Garage and the celebratory days of early disco—a
time where everyone was welcome on the dancefloor
It was on a pilgrimage through Japan to explore his Japanese roots in 2017,
where Chang’s passion for high fidelity sound was first ignited. Since then, he’s
collected vintage Klipsch and audiophile gear with the hopes of opening Salt
Lake City’s first audiophile bar.
As a DJ, Chang’s sets are transportive, weaving disco in and out of genres from
German new wave to Japanese city pop. You can expect to hear immersive
rhythms, groove-driven basslines and familiar melodies that feel both timeless
and ephemeral.
