Nessa rose to prominence online in 2019 by posting song covers of herself on TikTok. She soon signed a recording contract with Warner Records before launching her music career in July 2020 with the release of her debut single, "Pain." Her yearning, heartfelt alternative pop earned her a dedicated following, and by 2021 her single "i hope ur miserable until ur dead" had crossed onto the Billboard Hot 100, cementing her as one of the genre's most emotionally direct young voices. Her latest EP, Jesus loves a primadonna, came out earlier this year, with her third studio album, Tough Love, on the way this September.
Ahead of her new album cycle and a slew of tour dates opening for The Neighbourhood, Nessa joined Joel for a candid conversation about learning to trust her own voice, the years-long journey to understanding her mental health, and what it means to finally feel like the music she's making is truly hers.
