[NYC Premiere] Hinoki: An Immersive Dance and Sound Performance with Maude Vôs, Ali Berger +TBA

What does it mean to be alive, right now, in this body, among these people?

On Oct 17-18, Hinoki takes over Planet X for two nights of immersive dance and sound performance — an up-close reckoning with loss, solitude, and the strange and difficult work of figuring out who you are and where you belong.

Set across 14,000 square feet in East Williamsburg, dancers weave through the audience inside a living sound installation — no stage to stand apart from, only bodies moving through sound together.

Named after the ancient, sacred Japanese cypress, hi-no-ki translates to "tree of the sun" and holds a sacred place in Shinto spirituality, which holds that everything in our world — a tree or rock— houses a divine spirit known as kami. You are invited to move through an immersive sound installation with dancers weaving in and out of the audience as visual artist, Eric Martich illuminates Hinoki's world

Saturday night Oct 17, Maude Vôs (@the_sound_sculptress), LA-based DJ, producer, and label head of Delusional Records, joins the line up with sets that swirl airy vocals, metallic textures, and rigid grooves across releases on Yuku, Scuffed Recordings, and Science Cult. Brooklyn's Julie Hill (@iamjuliehill), a singer-producer whose synth-driven and ambient work has drawn praise from Pitchfork, Stereogum, and KEXP, moves between the meditative, memory-and-mindfulness territory of her 2024 album glow serene. Scott Li (@scoyoh) is a celebrated and versatile violinist and collaborator across music, film and dance known for his emotional depth and inventiveness. He was commissioned by Vim Vigor Dance company for a 30 mins site specific dance piece in 2021, and was awarded 1st place in Prix D’Été in 2019 for his seven-movement electroacoustic chamber work memoriae


Oct 18 Sunday lines up Ali Berger (@aliberger.dr5), whose deep improvisational practice moves between the mechanized funk of Midwest house and gently freaked rhythms built on drum machines and grooveboxes.
Suzie Sanford and Matthew Tineo are two rising stars from NYU Steinhardt. Suzie is a producer and member of 3rd Ave, a collective championing underground rap, hyperpop music and spent the past four years tearing through stages in NYC, Sacramento, and Prague. Whilst playing solo, Suzie trades the group's energy for something moodier, building deep, ambient textures on hardware synths. Matthew Tineo, a Brooklyn-based saxophonist has performed with R&B, pop, and experimental artists alike and has taken the stage at Juilliard and the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center.
Hinoki creator Jenn Chan — a Hong Kong native now based in New York — presents the world-building soundtracks that inspired Hinoki itself: sounds gathered across a decade of moving between homes and searching for rootedness. Hinoki is where the things she treasured most as a child — dance, music, and performance — quietly come together, connecting an inner, meditative world to collective motion.

Movement of Hinoki

Hinoki's movement is shaped by three extraordinary movement directors, and we're grateful for the artistry each brings to this piece. Carsyn Gekas is a New York–based dancer and choreographer originally from Dallas, Texas. She trained at Purchase College's Conservatory of Dance and performed repertory by Crystal Pite, Micaela Taylor, Kyle Abraham, and Martha Graham.
Elinor Kleber Diggs, a New York City–based choreographer and multimedia artist working across dance, photography, and sound, is a 2025 Baryshnikov Arts Fellow and 2026 Dancing While Black Fellow whose work has been shown at Triskelion Arts, Kaatsbaan, and Gibney.
Savannah Gaillard, is a multidisciplinary artist interested in exploring how the Black body is represented in physical and digital space, Savannah trained at the Kirov Academy, the Ailey School, and NYU Tisch and now performs with the Trisha Brown Dance Company. Together, they lead a cast of undeniably talented dancers bringing Hinoki's movement to life including Emmy Lebrun, Julia Lie, Lucia Gagliardone, Paige Finley, Samanvita Kasthuri, Sydney Chow, Q. Irene Peng and Wan Rong Tseng.

2/ Non-consensual touching of musicians, dancers or anyone on site will not be tolerated
3/ Photography allowed — please no flash near the dance floor
4/ Please keep conversation on the dance floor to a minimum so you don't distract the people next to you. Still feel the need to yap? You may step out through the right side of the stage to the patio

Accessibility

Planet X is a ground-level, fully wheelchair-accessible venue. An outdoor patio to the right side of the stage offers a quieter spot to step away. Expect light and video projections along with water-based haze.
