Liminal Mischief Presents: Jay Denham

Liminal Mischief is thrilled to welcome second-wave Detroit techno pioneer Jay Denham to San Antonio for his Texas debut. Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jay brings 35 years of experience and a sound described as "the best of both worlds": a fusion of raw Chicago house and driving Detroit techno with a funky Kalamazoo touch. He is deeply influenced by Frankie Knuckles, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Kraftwerk, and funk legends Rick James and Parliament.

He is affiliated with Detroit techno icons Kevin Saunderson and Anthony “Shake” Shakir, who helped launch his career on Transmat's Fragile imprint and KMS Records with early classics "Rituals" (as Vice) and "Insync" (as Fade II Black). In 1992, Jay founded his own label, Black Nation Records, and refined his signature “funky techno” sound with the release of the “Birth of a Nation” EP. He's recorded under aliases including Blackman, Constant Ritual, Defenders Of The Ghetto, Fade II Black, and Vice, with releases spanning Transmat, KMS, 430 West, Disko B, and Tresor, plus his own labels Black Nation, Sector 616, and Slavery 2000. His album "Synthesized Society" (Disko B) was named the #2 album of the year in 2000 by Groove Magazine.

Jay has performed at Movement Detroit, Awakenings, Zero Chill, Time Warp, Sonar, Tresor Berlin, and Fuse and is famous for his hot mixing, rocking three decks at once. Local support includes Austin’s own after-hours specialist, Nick McDonnough, and San Antonio’s Kowboy, warming us up with deep dance cuts from his record collection.
