Jane Kolias: Metalsum

About the concert

Opening reception 4:00-6:00pm Join Next Stage Arts for the opening reception of "METALSUM," a new exhibition by Putney artist Jane Kolias , whose inventive sculptures and metal quilts transform discarded objects into compelling works of art. Inspired by nature and guided by the materials themselves, Kolias creates rustic sculptures from abandoned metal objects gathered from antique shops, thrift stores, scrap yards, rural roadsides, woodland walks, and even the occasional kitchen drawer. Each piece begins with an idea but evolves organically as salvaged components suggest new possibilities, resulting in unexpected compositions that celebrate creativity, sustainability, and the beauty of reinvention. The exhibition also features Kolias' newest body of work—vibrant metal quilts crafted from vintage cookie tins. Drawing on traditional quilt patterns while embracing reclaimed materials, these colorful pieces expand her exploration of texture, pattern, and found-object artistry. A lifelong artist, Kolias has worked across a remarkable range of creative disciplines, including theater, dance, costume design, textiles, landscape art, stonework, and hardscaping. Her recent focus on metalwork—including welding, fabrication, jewelry making, and metal quilting—brings together decades of artistic experience in a body of work that is both playful and deeply rooted in craftsmanship. Meet the artist, explore the exhibition, and enjoy light refreshments as we celebrate the opening of this imaginative collection that reveals the extraordinary possibilities hidden within everyday discarded objects. This show will be on exhibit August 16-November 8. The Next Stage Gallery is open during events, and by appointment with the artist or by contacting Next Stage at info@nextstagearts.org or (802) 387-0102.
