Yiddish and Sufiana Archives in Spatial Sound: Chaia & Arshia Fatima Haq [discostan]

About the concert

Join Chaia and Arshia Haq for an evening showcasing fusions of Yiddish and Sufiana traditional music. The duo presents at Audium-Theatre of Sound, a 176-speaker immersive sound room, where samples move in psychedelic shapes around the audience.

Arshia Fatima Haq works across film, visual art, performance, and sound, in feminist modes outside of western frameworks. Her current work explores indigenous knowledge within Sufism. She is also the founder of Discostan, a decolonial club project, radio show, and record label working with material from the SWANA region. Tonight’s performance distills a practice of deep listening she has known since childhood. “There’s this shared atmosphere—called ‘sama’—of listening and devotional experience that arises between the performer and listener. Listening is just as important an act…as making music.” – Pitchfork Magazine, 2020

Chaia transforms dance music into a powerful exploration of identity, weaving house and techno grooves with klezmer and Yiddish music. Her electric grooves and archival samples from her grandmother merge seamlessly, creating a sonic bridge between centuries of Jewish diasporic experience as ancient rhythms pulsed through modern beats. Through her brilliant fusion of old and new, Chaia suggests that transgenerational trauma can reshape identity - and that learning to love this transformed self is a complex journey worth taking. - Le Büro, 2024

The first show will run from 6:30pm-8pm and the second will be 8:15pm-9:45pm.
