In 1842, in Hamburg, the struggling family of the 9 year-old prodigy Johannes Brahms very nearly moved to the USA so that their genius son could become a touring child sensation. In the antebellum America of minstrel shows, civil war and the constant need for capital, who would this other Brahms have become? He would have escaped the burden of being hailed as the successor to Beethoven at age 20, and spared the trauma of all night dances at Hamburg's harbour brothels when he was just 13, but what would this American Brahms have accomplished, and what would these two versions of the great composer have to say to each other? With Michael Bridge, accordion and Yolanda Bruno, violin.
