Alphabet Soup is a Bay Area band that fused hip-hop and jazz, emerging from the region's acid jazz scene of the early 1990s. The group built live instrumental sets around rappers, with saxophonist Kenny Brooks, pianist Dred Scott and drummer Jay Lane among its founding members. Its debut "Layin' Low In The Cut" (1995) won best urban contemporary album at the BAMMIE Awards.
